কমলো নিউইয়র্কের সাবওয়ে অপরাধ, নিরাপত্তা জোরদারে ১২’শ অফিসার নিয়োগ

সময়ের পরিবর্তনের সাথে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিউইয়র্কে যেন অপরাধ বেড়েই চলেছিলো। শহরের রাস্তাঘাট, শপিংমল, বসতবাড়ি এবং সাবওয়েসহ সব স্থানে হামলা-মারামারি যেন রুটিন ওয়ার্কে পরিণত হয়েছিলো৷ তবে এবার শহরের সাবওয়ে নিয়ে সুখবর দিলেন প্রশাসনিক কর্তাব্যক্তিরা৷ চলতি বছর এখনও পর্যন্ত সাবওয়ে রেলে ১৯ দশমিক ৪ শতাংশ অপরাধ কমেছে গত বছরের তুলনায়। গতমাসে ট্রনজিট অপরাধ কমেছে ৯ শতাংশ। এছাড়া নিরাপত্তা জোরদারে আরও ১২’শ পুলিশ অফিসার নিয়োগ দেওয়া হয়েছে।

বৃহস্পতিবার (১৬ মার্চ) বার্কলেস সেন্টার ট্রেন স্টেশনে জড়ো হয়ে এসব কথা জানান মেয়র এরিক অ্যাডামস, এনওয়াইপিডি কমিশনার কিচ্যান্ট সিওয়েল এবং এমটিএ চেয়ার জ্যানো লিবার।

তারা বলেন, এটি আমাদের জন্য সুখবর যে অপরাধ কমেছে। তবে আমরা এরপরেও সজাগ থাকতে চাই। তাই অতিরিক্ত আরও ১২শত পুলিশ মোতায়ন করা হয়েছে।

এনওয়াইপিডি কমিশনার সেওয়েল বলেছেন, আমরা চাই স্টেশনগুলোতে আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর পোষাক পরিহিত মানুষ থাকুক, যাতে সাধারণ মানুষ নিরাপদ বোধ করে। যদিও এর জন্য আমাদের অতিরিক্ত ব্যয় করতে হবে।

তিনি বলেন, আমরা জানি এটা পর্যাপ্ত নয়। আমাদের আরও কৌশলি হতে হবে। আমাদের সামর্থের মধ্যে থেকে কৌশল অবলম্বন করে শহরের মানুষের নিরাপত্তা দিতে হবে।

মেয়র অ্যাডামস বলেছেন, আমরা জননিরাপত্তার বিষয়ে কোনাে ঘাটাঘাটি করবেন না। এটি বজায় রাখার জন্য যা যা প্রয়োজন তা চালিয়ে যাবেন। তবে উদ্বেগের বিষয় হচ্ছে প্রতি বছর এনওয়াইপিডি অফিসারের সংখ্যা কমছে। তবে আমরা বিশ্বাস করি একটি স্মার্ট নিয়োগ পদ্ধতি আমাদের এ সংকট মোকাবেলায় সহায়তা করবে।

মেয়র অ্যাডামস রাইডারশিপ বাড়ানোর ওপর জোর দিয়ে আরও বলেন, ট্রেনগুলি পরিষ্কার রাখতে হবে এবং মানসিক অসুস্থতার সাথে লড়াই করা ব্যক্তিদের যথাযথ যত্ন নিতে হবে। আমরা ইতিমধ্যে ৪ হাজার মানসিক সমস্যাযুক্ত লোকের যত্ন নিচ্ছি।

এমটিএ চেয়ার লিবার বলেন, একটি জিনিস যা আমরা আশা করি যে লোকেদের ঘুরে বেড়াতে এবং অফিসে ফিরে আসতে উৎসাহিত করবে তা হল তারা কাজ করতে পারে এবং তারা তাদের ভ্রমণ জুড়ে সংযোগ বজায় রাখতে পারে।

New York subway crime down, 1200 officers appointed to strengthen security

Mayor Adams also emphasized increasing ridership, keeping trains clean and providing proper care for those struggling with mental illness. We are already taking care of 4 thousand people with mental problems.

“One of the things we hope will encourage people to commute and come back to the office is that they can get to work and they can maintain connections throughout their trip,” said MTA Chair Lieber.
